We all know that 2017 was a year like none other. As we start into 2018, and as we enter this year’s Black History Month, I think it’s important that we pay special attention to the things that bring us together, and not just those that divide us. As a Black founder and CEO, it is extremely important to me that we learn from the past, embrace each other in the present, and come together to build a better future.
Culture is the glue that holds communities together. Culture crosses each and every line, it knows no borders. It’s not dictated by race, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, or even geography. It is simply an amalgam of all the unique individuals that comprise it. Dōgen said, “The ocean does not reject any water; this is cooperation. It is because of this that water collects and becomes an ocean.” We are the water. The culture this the ocean. The waves move us all.
It is in the coming together of people that great things are created. It is in the creation of great things that history is made. The greatest paths in human history have been paved with many hands. In the words of Aristotle, “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” I have always believed that when passionate individuals come together, nothing is impossible. This is technology, this is business, this is culture.
We want to be more than just a tech company, because we want to create more than tech products. We want to create something greater than ourselves, something that helps to advance not just technology, but society and culture.
HiBeams is a venture dedicated to building a brighter future, by bringing people together, creating technologies, and growing culture.
Unfortunately, people across and throughout the world are divided. We cannot talk of the coming together of people without recognizing the forces pulling us apart. It’s true that we are still living in dark times. Too often, we hear stories of hatred and divisiveness.
James Baldwin said, “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” Dr. King said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
It is in this tenacious spirit for progress and betterment, that we make our promise to face the darkness and light the way in all we do. Not just this month, but every month.
From me and the entire HiBeams team, One Love.
